Marlborough College Malaysia (MCM) offers an outstanding co-educational, British education for pupils aged 3-18 and has been described as ‘Asia’s only authentic British boarding school’ by Singapore’s Tatler. It has been ranked as one of the top 100 private schools in the world for four consecutive years by The Spear’s Schools Index, and has over 40 countries represented among the school community. As the only sister school to Marlborough College UK, pupils of MCM belong to a community steeped in tradition with a shared history spanning over 175 years of holistic education and academic excellence.

Academic Excellence

Academic results are excellent and the College has been an IB World School since 2014. Students are encouraged to go beyond mere knowledge acquisition and examination performance to develop attributes such as creative and critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills, as emphasised by the IB Learner Profile. Embarking on the IB program also promotes independent learning and students take increasing responsibility for their academic growth as the course progresses. The diverse range of subjects covered in the IB curriculum provides individuals with a broad knowledge base while also giving them the skills to engage with people in an increasingly globalised world.

IB Diploma results at MCM have consistently surpassed the global average with an average points score of 35 over the last five years. In 2023 the average IB points score was 33, equivalent to two straight A grades at A-Level while 14% of pupils achieved over 40 points. This impressive performance has paved the way for pupils to gain admission into prestigious universities worldwide with 93% taking up places at their first or second choice university in 2023. A comprehensive programme specifically tailored by the College’s University Guidance Department and regular visits from many international university representatives throughout the year ensure that students feel confident when applying to their chosen university wherever they want to go in the world.

GCSE results are equally strong. In 2023 the average grade achieved was an ‘A’, with 79% of all students taking Edexcel subjects getting an A or A*. Overall, with Edexcel and Cambridge results combined, over half of IGCSE pupils received 5 or more A*s and 41% of pupils received 9 or more A*/A grades. The overall pass rate was 97% reflecting the high standards of teaching and learning at the College.

An Enriching Curriculum

The College understands that the best learning takes place by integrating academics with a rich variety of co-curricular activities, ensuring pupils develop new skills and broaden their horizons.

Learning broadly follows and extends the British National curriculum which is supported by a wide range of enrichment activities including clubs, societies, lectures, museum, gallery and theatre trips, conferences and concerts along with educational trips to other countries. Mandarin, Spanish, French and Bahasa are offered as foreign languages.

All pupils are encouraged to explore and enjoy the Arts. With dedicated theatre spaces and music practice rooms, every pupil has the opportunity to develop their unique talents. The Drama Department in both the Prep and Senior School run multiple productions throughout the year fostering a love of performing and offering an enriching educational experience for all. The Music Department produce several concerts each term and both the Prep and Senior Schools have their own respective choirs.  There are also a number of additional instrumental ensembles that pupils can be a part of ranging from Classical to Jazz, Rock and Pop.

Outstanding teaching staff

Over 90% of the teaching staff at MCM are from the UK and many have had teaching and/or academic experience at Marlborough College UK. They bring with them the pedagogy and sense of tradition common to British boarding schools. The remaining teaching staff share their common values and commitment and many have worked previously at similar British independent schools.This, along with small class sizes ensure that students receive personalised attention and support when needed and individuals are encouraged to actively participate in discussions and ask questions. Marlborough College Malaysia also prioritises learning by employing specialist teachers who are experts in their respective fields. Even the very youngest pupils in the Pre-Prep School are taught by specialist teachers for subjects like Music, Mandarin, and Swimming.

Facilities

Situated on a sprawling 90-acre site, the campus at Marlborough College Malaysia offers pupils a wealth of possibilities and pupils can take advantage of the beautiful lake for water sport activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking or fishing. The expansive grounds also include a dedicated space for Forest School providing pupils with hands-on experiences in nature, promoting curiosity, exploration, and a deep appreciation for the environment. Additionally, the award-winning Barton Farm allows all students to cultivate their own produce, fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world.

Sporting enthusiasts are also well catered for at Marlborough College Malaysia. The campus features two outdoor swimming pools, including a dedicated pool for younger pupils, an indoor climbing wall, tennis and netball courts, rugby and football pitches, golf driving range, cricket oval, astro pitch, two sports halls, gymnastics studio, full athletics track, and a state-of-the-art gym.

In addition, the campus has excellent facilities for learning including a theatre, recording studios, Design and Technology workshops with a Robot Wars arena as well as three separate libraries and three dining halls for the Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School respectively.

Award-winning pastoral care

Marlborough College Malaysia has been recognised for its outstanding pastoral care and educational excellence and is one of only five COBIS Beacon Schools worldwide. It has also received Highly Commended from the Boarding Schools' Association in 2021 for both The Wellbeing & Mental Health Initiative Award and The Boarding Research Award.

Boarding is popular at the College and staff ensure that students are supported for all their needs whether it is academic, personal, or emotional. Full boarding offers pupils easy access to teachers and learning resources outside of regular class hours and a significant number of teaching staff and their families live on campus, providing invaluable guidance and support to students who wish to excel in their studies. Boarders at the College have the advantage of using the facilities during evenings and weekends such as the library, Art rooms and Music rooms. As well as this, they can also enjoy the sports facilities including the Olympic sized pool, grass pitches, climbing wall or the state-of-the-art fitness centre. Teachers are readily available in the boarding house to offer dedicated assistance with homework and visiting tutors offering subject specific help are available in the evenings and weekends.

There is also the option for Weekly Boarding which involves pupils arriving on a Sunday evening and boarding through to Friday afternoon as well as Three-Day boarding for pupils aged 9-15 years old wanting a taste of boarding before moving to Full  Boarding.

Marlborough Alumni

There is a close connection with Marlborough College in the UK, well known for its famous alumni which includes William Morris (founder of Arts and Crafts movement in England) Sir John Betjeman, CBE (Poet Laureate, writer and broadcaster) and Catherine Middleton, the Princess of Wales.

Marlborough College Malaysia is proud to share in the ric heritage and traditions of its counterpart Marlborough College UK and there is a close connection between the two schools. As well as regular exchanges and visits between the two organisations, the Old Marlburian network, which spans both schools, enables alumni the opportunity to connect and communicate with each other. A joint networking platform and app called MC Global Connect enables Marlburians the opportunity to find a mentor, post jobs, request work experience or simply search for other alumni in a similar field or location. With over 10,000 members from around the world, this community provides a vast network of opportunities for Old Marlburians to engage and collaborate with like-minded individuals.
