France

Officially called the French Republic, France has one of the world’s largest economies. It is a significant exporter (particularly of agricultural goods) and importer, a major recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI), and performs well in international rankings of healthcare and education. France is a member of the Group of 7, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The French economy combines private and state enterprise. Though the government still has a majority stake in key infrastructure, including railways, aircraft, telecommunications, electricity and nuclear power, it has been slackening its grip on these areas for the past 30 or so years.

France’s aerospace sector, led by European consortium Airbus, is an important contributor to national prosperity. Financial services, banking and insurance are also key.
