On the day A-level results were published, UCAS also said that, despite Brexit, the number of students from the EU27 nations who will take up places in the coming academic year had also risen slightly.So far, 33,630 students from outside the EU have been awarded places, UCAS said, driven by a remarkable, 32 per cent increase in the number from China. From the EU27, 26,440 students have so far been accepted.

Fall in number of UK students awarded degree places

There has, however, been a fall in the number of UK students awarded places compared to this stage last year.UCAS said, "The number of UK 18-year-olds accepted is 199,370, a fall of less than one per cent, although this comes alongside a 1.9 per cent drop in the number of 18-year-olds in the UK population."More than 348,890 people (of all ages) from across the UK have been accepted so far this year – a one per cent decrease compared to A level results day 2018. A total of 408,960 have been placed on an undergraduate course in the UK so far. This is a one per cent decrease on A-level results day last year."

Record number of disadvantaged UK students accepted on courses 

UCAS also revealed that a record 17.3 per cent of 18-year-old Britons from the most disadvantaged backgrounds in England had been accepted for courses.Clare Marchant, UCAS chief executive, said, "Students receiving their exam results today should be incredibly proud of their achievements.
