Health and security risks in expat destinations: Argentina
No organisation today can afford to neglect its duty of care. To reduce health risks to individuals, and business and reputational risks to their employers, planning, preparation and up-to-date information are vital. As part of their series on global risk in popular expatriate destinations, global medical assistance provider CEGA and security specialist Solace Global discuss the risk rating in Argentina.

Argentina

OVERALL RISK RATING: LOWAs in other parts of the world, there is an underlying threat of indiscriminate terrorism and there have been a few small explosions in and around the capital over the last decade, caused by local anti-globalisation groups. There are also frequent (usually non-violent) demonstrations in Buenos Aires and other major cities; not least in the first few months of this year, when protestors rallied against the centre-right government.

Crime rate

Pick-pocketing, bag snatching, and mobile phone theft are all common. Kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes are less so, but public transport and tourist hot spots like Metropolitan Buenos Aires and Mendoza are most risky.

Medical facilities

Medical facilities vary, but are usually good in large urban areas, where private hospitals rival those of Western Europe and North America; particularly in Buenos Aires. Private treatment can be expensive and cash deposits may be asked for up front - especially from foreigners.Watch out for altitude sickness above 2,500 metres and for pollution in major cities. The north is also prone to severe flooding.

Vaccinations

Recommended vaccinations include yellow fever; hepatitis; tetanus; typhoid and rabies and precautions should be taken against the Zika virus, dengue fever and malaria. For related news and features, visit our Global Health and Wellness section.Access hundreds of global services and suppliers in our Online DirectoryClick to get to the Relocate Global Online Directory  Get access to our free Global Mobility Toolkit Global Mobility Toolkit download factsheets resource centre
