Following the widely publicised allegations against senior figures in Westminster and Hollywood, Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the CBI, says businesses need to take the issue seriously, calling for a change of attitude and action to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace."Sexual harassment in all forms is unacceptable,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, who earlier this year urged businesses to take swifter action on creating more inclusive workplaces.“The harm done to people’s lives, self-esteem, confidence and dignity is profound. We must work together to stamp it out."

Committed leadership to create a turning point

Acknowledging today that there is “no doubt” sexual harassment exists in businesses, the CBI is advising leaders and employers to follow good business practices to ensure workplaces are free from sexual harassment."Westminster and Hollywood are currently in the spotlight, but there can be no doubt that it exists elsewhere, including in some businesses," said Ms Fairbairn."Businesses take the treatment and welfare of their employees very seriously. But sexual harassment is often hidden and can take many forms. It takes committed leadership to ensure the workplace is free from sexual harassment."

Steps to prevent sexual harassment in workplaces

The CBI said it is planning to bring together large and small firms to support change, build on and share existing practice to prevent harassment across all workplace. The CBI is advising businesses to:
  • ensure there are clear processes for employees to report concerns over sexual harassment, in confidence and without fear
  • develop codes of conduct about what is and is not acceptable behaviour and ensure everyone understands it
  • continue to increase the diversity and inclusiveness of their workforces at all levels, including the most senior.
"Establishing a supportive culture and effective process across all business is a priority for the CBI and our members,” said Carolyn Fairbairn. "This must be a turning point across society."For related news and features, visit our Human Resources section. Look out for the launch of 2018's Relocate Awards, entries open in January. Relocate’s new Global Mobility Toolkit provides free information, practical advice and support for HR, global mobility managers and global teams operating overseas.Global Mobility Toolkit download factsheets resource centreAccess hundreds of global services and suppliers in our Online DirectoryClick to get to the Relocate Global Online Directory
